Ideas from Italy

One night in Rome we ate dinner outside in our piazza, and a pre-Easter religious procession came through. The assortment of red, white, and black religious uniforms was just like out of a Bellini Venice painting! Earlier that day I'd seen another holy man with one of those flat, wide-brimmed hats, dog collar, and black dress talking with some people as dust-men in reflective yellow suits came to empty the trash cans. It was a very Stanley Spencer sight-- the mixing of the holy and the earthly, in uniform.

What can I use in my work from this experience?
Space of ruins.
fragments of things
Flood markers. plaques, fingers of God
blocks being built of other blocks, eroded edges
spatial levels of time, conceptual space in general
wiring of ruins
Roman painting, bearded character
lettuce under foot
religious procession, uniforms
feeling of perfection, best-ness of Farnese piazza
Italian paintings as my personal history, and not
